I am interested in the mathematical theories of machine learning and optimal control. I am particularly fascinated by the application of these formal frameworks to the study of the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS is increasingly understood to function as a heirarchically arranged set of dynamic recurrent networks whose operations are shaped by simple learning rules. Using mathematics, computer simulation, and theoretically motivated experiments I aim to shed light on how robust feedback control laws are learned and employed by the CNS.
